Jizis wunderbare Reise

Diplom Praxis

Jizis wunderbare Reise (Jizi’s Wonderful Journey) is an absolute picture book without words about biodiversity. Over the course of 58 colour illustrations, it relates the encounters Jizi has with various animal groups. Copious and lovingly created details provide surprises on every page. A generous space for the child’s imagination is opened up and conversation is encouraged between children and parents.

How can children’s book artists use surrealist visual methods to express serious issues such as feminism, minorities, family issues, etc., while also showing the positive sides to human nature? My theoretical work considers these questions. I have studied the surrealist style of art and, in this context, I have looked at works by children’s book artist Anthony Browne. I analysed his surreal visual style, its characteristics on display in children’s books, and the metaphorical symbolism of his visual language.
