Maps*Mists*Making Predictions
Diplom Praxis
Prof. Susanne M. Winterling
Maps*Mists*Making Predictions concerns the development of non-linear navigation tools that relate to processes of technical transfers and abstractions for the temporal and spatial navigation of people and processes. In my work, these are used to produce new, speculative and alternative prospects for navigation: phenomena that come about in the interlinking of physical and simulated physical spaces as well as their systematics. In Maps*Mists* Making Predictions, a location- and time-specific, GPS-based spatial installation has been created for this purpose, which includes, for example, a live, manually calculated digital companion (Inhabit) that can be accessed globally, via an app, and was conceived as an alternative to the numerical clock. In addition, two kinetic objects (flat orbits) have been created, which are reminiscent of industrial two-axis solar trackers. They determine position and time, via GPS, and obtain their movement in relation to the predicted position of the sun. Moreover, an intervention with plant fat on the glass surfaces of the architecture acts as a filter between the interior and exterior space, creating scenarios that partially look digital, while also generating temporary light artefacts that wander through the room depending on the sunlight.
Diplom Theory
Prof. Dr. Marc Ries
The theoretical side to my Diplom is likewise concerned with actual spaces and with simulated physical spaces as well as their transmission processes. This is precisely where the phenomenon of Lens Flare originates, since it can take place naturally during the material production of images by an internal scattering of light in lens constellations such as lenses. In Lens Flare—From Physical Phenomenon to Non-linear Narrative Figure LF, the peripheral and accompanying phenomenon, which in the space of transmission passes through different paths than those of the light of the intended image, is placed in the centre of the point of observation and is used as a speculative figure for thought and narration: as a companion to make visible and test new, non-linear paths in the observation of images and their emergence. What do we find gathered in this abstract phenomenon that comes into being in the process at a multiple interface? Which spaces does it originate from, which space does it define? In which spaces does it help one to enter? And which atmospheres does it bind in the age of its physical simulation and digital transmission?
