Double-wire mesh fences exist as a uniformly standardised structure throughout Central Europe. They usually separate public from private spaces, or they divide private space into units of varying sizes. A double-mesh fence with a height of 60 cm can be a symbolic boundary, while a height from 200 cm upwards becomes a substantial barrier. The tight spacing of just 5 cm between its vertical bars makes it hard to climb with shoes. The horizontal bars, spaced at 20 cm apart, provide vital stability to the fence. Anyone who has ever attempted to climb over such a fence knows what level of physical dexterity is needed to do so. In my Diplom thesis, an absent section of bar in the fence created an opening in the apparently infinite boundary grid. The gap functions as an indexical sign, with a meaning that exists, at the very least, during the temporary presence of its creator. The horizontal bar at the bottom of the gap could be used as a rung for climbing over the fence. Removing a part of the bar can be seen as a destructive gesture. Yet it could just as easily be intended and understood as a constructive one too.

Numerous examples exist in which people set markers that record their temporary physical presence at a specified place. Some of these examples are emulated, and some even become global phenomena. There appears to be a need for people to carry out such a deed. When their thoughts and talk turn to signs with a similar purpose, they instinctively express the following sentence: I was here. My theoretical work analyses what people mean when they tag a mark with the words I was here, while further examining the phrase in terms of its universality. This approach produces the following questions, among others: what features are left by the mark? What rules follow the necessary actions to leave an I was here? In the practical section I tried to apply knowledge surrounding signs and rituals, in order to gain hands-on familiarity, and to make it possible to experience them in an installation setting.
